LOVE IS IN THE AIR -HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY

Valentine’s day as become a special day where people express their love, especially to their mates, but also to other family and friends.  Remember those little boxes we made in grade school and filled for our classmates?  Many of us enjoy chocolate and treats to celebrate.   For those of us who don’t have a sweetheart, this can be a time when we feel lonely or left out.  No need!  It’s a chance to show love to yourself — get a massage, take a walk, buy yourself some flowers, and join some friends.  The more you love yourself and others, the more love you will attract!

The Legend of St Valentine is really quite different from the way we celebrate it today.   Roman soldiers were not allowed to marry per orders by Emperor Claudius II.  But a priest named Valentine disobeyed this order and secretly performed marriage ceremonies for many soldiers in Rome.  He was eventually arrested, and imprisoned. When he realized Claudius would likely have him executed, with the help of soldiers in the prison whom he had married, Valentine sent letters of gratitude to families who had supported his work and also encouraged them to keep their faith amidst Claudius’ persecutions.  According to legend, Valentine signed many of these letters with the phrase, “From your Valentine”.

In the winter of 287 A.D., Valentine was executed and on the anniversary of his death, Christians began the practice of sending notes of love and encouragement to those who are being persecuted.  These notes of support eventually became known as “valentines”.

So perhaps we should be sending our valentines to those who are working for causes, or those who might need some cheery words?  Something to ponder.  How will you celebrate the day?
